I took a bit of time off after the release of ‘Gun Shy’ before I started in on writing what would become ‘Recently’ (4.5 years 😬!!). The truth is, I was unsure how my business would work in this new streaming reality. It takes a lot of streams to amount to any meaningful amount of money (1 million streams equals around $3,500-$4,000 if you own your recordings), and despite all the love Gun Shy was getting, it still wasn’t streaming enough to equal what I had grown accustomed to in the world of iTunes downloads or CD sales before it.
All that being said, there were a few songs that got written before I officially committed to writing a new album, and ‘Feel What You Feel’ is one of them. I wrote it with my friends Alli Rogers and Chris DeTray at a writing retreat whose whole premise was to create a safe, judgement-free space to write songs. Any idea is worth chasing, and nobody was trying to write a hit. Thats the environment this tune was written in, and I love it for that.
The lyric is packed with truth about allowing whatever feeling is coming at you to BE instead of trying to either ignore it or cover it with a more pleasant one. Musically and melodically, it feels like it comes from another time- late 90’s maybe? The lyric is below the track, what do you think- does it need to see the light of day? Do you connect with it?
